The University of Virginia’s Center for the Liberal Arts is working with Teaching Tolerance to assemble Teaching Hard Literature, an initiative meant to complement Teaching Tolerance’s celebrated Teaching Hard History framework and resources, launched at our program at UVA in March 2018.  With Teaching Hard Literature, we hope to provide both encouragement and means for the teaching of literary texts by and about a number of under-represented populations; to begin.  We are beginning by asking teachers what texts they are and aren’t teaching, and why: teachers willing to share that information (anonymously, but in a way that we promise will be central to development of the project) are asked to complete the brief questionnaire, using (for the first question) group number 28 by Labor Day, September 1.  For concerns or uncertainties about the questionnaire, please write to [email protected].  The survey elicited 1200 responses nationwide in its first two weeks online, so we believe we will have a powerful data set with which to begin this work.
